Cadmium-free reds

Strong, lightfast reds without cadmium: what replaces cadmium red, how the alternatives handle, and every tube.

Why go cadmium-free?

Cadmium reds are superb pigments, but they're expensive and contain a toxic metal that needs careful handling and disposal. Modern organic reds, especially the pyrroles developed in the 1980s, now match them closely in strength and lightfastness, often at a lower price. See cadmium on the safer pigments page.

Meet the alternatives

Pyrrole red PR254

The closest match to cadmium red medium: warm, strong and fairly opaque. Often sold as 'Winsor Red' or 'Bright Red'.

Pyrrole scarlet PR255

Lighter and more orange, like cadmium red light or vermilion.

Pyrrole rubine PR264

A deep, cool crimson, a good lightfast stand-in for alizarin.

Naphthol red PR170

Inexpensive and bright. Lightfastness varies between grades, so check each tube's rating.

Naphthol scarlet PR188

A warm scarlet with good lightfastness, common in student and artist lines.

Quinacridone red PR209

Cool and transparent; makes clean pinks with white and is lovely for glazing.

Quinacridone rose / violet PV19

A cool, bluish red: the 'cool red' of many split-primary palettes.

Anthraquinone red PR177

The usual pigment in 'permanent alizarin crimson': transparent, deep and lightfast.

Perylene red PR149

A deep, transparent, very lightfast red for glazes and darks.

Getting cadmium-like coverage
  • Most organic reds are more transparent than cadmium. A very small amount of titanium white or pyrrole orange adds covering power without dulling the red much.
  • Or underpaint the area with an opaque earth such as light red (PR101 Red Iron Oxide (Mars / Burnt Sienna)), then paint or glaze the clean red over it.
  • For oranges, mix pyrrole red with a warm arylide yellow (PY65 Arylide Yellow RN); for pinks, use a quinacridone with white so they stay clean.
