PR101 Red Iron Oxide (Mars / Burnt Sienna)

About PR101

History

Synthetic iron oxides, the 'Mars' colors, have been made since the 19th century as a purer, more consistent version of natural red earths. PR101 covers many colors, from Venetian and Indian reds to transparent red oxide.

In mixes

Permanent, inexpensive and safe. The opaque grades cover well and give warm, earthy tints with white; transparent red oxide is a strong, glowing glaze color. Mixed with ultramarine it makes rich darks and greys.

Drying speed is typical for linseed oil; tubes ground in safflower or poppy oil, or with driers added, will differ. These are general notes on the pigment, not on any one brand.
